The Magic of Metaphors to Beat Procrastination

Updated: Jul 25, 2024

Procrastination is a frustrating and debilitating energy drain. To remedy this challenge, I have conjured up a metaphor to assist me in completing the arduous task of writing content for my comprehensive and multifaceted website. The metaphor I use to beat procrastination is, "A grown-up theme park filled with a variety of fun and inspiring activities."

It was a blast to be guided through the process of designing this imagined grown-up playground during group training at the Coaching Institute. The creative reframing of the demanding task of content writing enabled me to flow with my watery – that is, my emotional – nature, adapting to my moods.

When I felt adventurous, I would join my imaginary "exploration group" to research other websites and gather inspiring ideas. Or, I would engage with my imaginary "play group" to share my ideas with others.

When I was tired or uninspired, I would relax on my pretend lazy river, and chill out in immersive water pods, visualizing creative content for my website. Other times, I would engage in the stimulating "brainstorm activities group" or stop by the "drama club" for some juicy stories to ignite my creative fire.

My favorite theme park adventure was zipping down the long tunnel of "Oh boy, another training," splashing topsy-turvy into the water below. I’d repeat this fun and invigorating activity over and over, until I was ready to rest on a moonbeam chair in the "creative writing pod." There, I would let my fingers dance across my laptop to inspiring Beta-beat music, and playfully create tons of inspired web content, lickety-split.

Reframing procrastination in this light was what activated my passion and vigor, allowing me to playfully create and enjoy the process of writing my web content.

It was this creative Activation Method exercise, which I first experienced in a SOUL-listic Group Self Coaching session, that swiftly brought me to the finish line after years of being stuck. I transformed “working on my website” to “YIPPY… I’m off to the Theme Park now!”
