Ayurveda or Allopathic Medicine?

Updated: Aug 5, 2024

Thousands of years before modern medicine provided scientific evidence for the mind-body connection, enlightened Sages and Vaidyas of India developed Ayurveda, which continues to be one of the world’s most sophisticated and powerful mind-body health systems. More than just a mere method of treating illness, Ayurveda is a science of life. The Sanskrit word “Ayur” means life, and “Veda” means science or knowledge. As more and more people are turning to holistic and natural medicine, Ayurveda – with its tried-and-true commonsense practices, deep rooted in ancient science – is becoming more relevant today.

Ayurveda says the mind and the body are inextricably connected, and nothing has more power to heal and transform the body than the mind. Freedom from illness depends upon expanding our own awareness, bringing it into balance and then extending balance to the body.

Unlike the disease-based approach of conventional medicine, the Ayurvedic approach does not just treat symptoms, but eliminates the cause of the problem. Its goal is to get to the root of the problem, create the environment for the body to heal itself and regain its normal balance and function, and prevent disease or dis-EASE.

It has been stated by some holistic doctors and scholars that the modern Western allopathic medical system will seem to future societies like the Dark Ages of medicine. We will eventually look back at this century and laugh sadly at how some medical practices injured, even killed, patients, and kept people sick – and in a system of dependance on pharmaceuticals that suppress, rather than heal, symptoms. The body is designed to heal.

  • The Ayurvedic medical system has been practiced for over 5000 years.

  • Homeopathic medicine (*see description below) has been practiced for about 250 years.

  • Allopathic/modern medicine gained prominence in the 1940s.

The modern Western Allopathic medical system, also known as conventional or mainstream medicine, has its roots in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It emerged as a dominant medical approach during the 20th century, and has continued to evolve and shape healthcare practices to the present day. While the exact beginning can be traced back to various historical events and advancements, it is generally recognized that the system gained prominence during the mid-20th century, particularly after World War II, with the advent of antibiotics, advancements in surgical techniques, and the development of pharmaceutical drugs.

While there are valid concerns about the limitations and shortcomings of the modern Western Allopathic medical system, it is important to acknowledge that it also brings significant benefits in certain areas. With advancements in medical technology, it has made remarkable progress in emergency care, trauma treatment, and surgical interventions, saving countless lives. Additionally, the system has contributed to the understanding and management of acute illnesses and infectious diseases, leading to improved public health outcomes. Integrating the strengths of Western medicine with holistic approaches, such as Ayurveda and other complementary systems, can pave the way for a comprehensive healthcare model that addresses the individual's needs holistically, considering both physical and spiritual well-being.

By combining the best of both worlds, we can create a healthcare system that embraces the body's innate healing abilities while utilizing the advancements of modern medicine when necessary.

*Homeopathic medicine has been around for over 200 years. It was developed in the late 18th century by Samuel Hahnemann, a German physician, and has since gained recognition and popularity as a form of alternative medicine. Hahnemann's principles and practices of homeopathy were outlined in his book "Organon of the Medical Art," published in 1810. Homeopathy is based on the principle of "like cures like," where substances that can produce symptoms in healthy individuals are used to stimulate the body's natural healing response in those who are unwell. Over the years, homeopathy has been utilized by individuals seeking holistic and natural approaches to healthcare.
